Building Impact 2024

Discover how the George Killian Building Impact Fund is shaping Portland's future and empowering the next generation of real estate leaders.

Building on a Tradition of Impact

The George Killian Building Impact Fund for Portland State University’s Center for Real Estate was established in 2023, aiming to turn the season of giving into meaningful community support.

Now, in 2024, our Building Impact commitment has grown into a true partnership—becoming a key component of our community investment, driving lasting change, and nurturing future leaders in the real estate industry.

A Legacy Forward

George Killian’s journey began with an opportunity—a sports scholarship to Portland State University that made higher education possible. This chance to pursue advanced learning laid the foundation for a thriving career and the creation of Killian Pacific, a company that has flourished for over 50 years.

Throughout his life, George remained deeply committed to giving back to the community that supported him. Following his passing, we sought a meaningful way to honor his legacy and continue his spirit of generosity. In partnership with PSU’s Center for Real Estate, we established the George Killian Building Impact Fund, paying forward the opportunity given and empowering future generations.

“Building a better future requires commitment, collaboration, and belief in the potential of people. The George Killian Building Impact Fund reflects our vision for a thriving real estate industry—one led by ambitious, capable leaders who represent the diversity and strength of our community.”

Lance Killian, Chief Visionary Officer

Investing in Diversity and Innovation for a Stronger Industry

Why is this important? The leaders who will shape Portland’s future are learning today, and our investment in them impacts the trajectory, growth, and diversity of our region for years to come.

Portland State University plays a pivotal role in driving the region’s economic success. As a gateway for social mobility, it empowers students—many from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds—with the tools and opportunities to build meaningful careers. By breaking down barriers and opening doors, PSU helps ensure that talent and ambition are the only prerequisites for success.

Since 2005, the Center for Real Estate has been a cornerstone of this mission, equipping emerging professionals with a holistic, hands-on curriculum that prepares them to meet the challenges of the real estate industry. Together, PSU and the Center are transforming lives, fostering innovation, and strengthening the industry with fresh ideas and perspectives. Their collective impact is helping to create a more inclusive, dynamic real estate sector that reflects and serves the diverse communities of Portland.

2024 Fund Highlights

Empowering Scholars: In 2024, 6 real estate students received scholarships celebrating academic excellence. These scholarships provided crucial funding that allowed them to enroll in the real estate program at PSU. The scholars come from diverse backgrounds, many being first-generation college students, all aiming to build careers in real estate within the broader Portland area.

Cultivating Future Professionals: In October, the Center hosted a real estate career panel highlighting six different fields within the commercial real estate industry. This event introduced PSU students to various career opportunities and was promoted campus-wide to undergraduate and masters students of all disciplines. The goal is to build a pipeline of future PSU students—and real estate professionals—from underrepresented communities.

Enhancing Program Success Through Outreach: The Center is embarking on a strategic digital marketing campaign to enhance program visibility and increase enrollment. A larger cohort is vital for students to maximize opportunities to learn from each other, develop different perspectives, and build professional networks that enhance future career opportunities. Strengthening the Center’s enrollment also increases the value of the degrees students earn today, as the program grows and enhances its reputation.

“A thriving business depends on a talented, adaptable workforce. Our investment in Portland State University’s Center for Real Estate helps cultivate professionals with the skills, perspectives, and creativity to address the challenges of our industry—benefiting not only Killian Pacific but the entire Portland community.”

Adam Tyler, President of Killian Pacific

Internship Program at Killian Pacific

In addition to the fund, we created an internship program in 2023 to provide students from the Center for Real Estate with real-world experience and meaningful exposure to the industry. These 5-7 month paid internships offer students first-hand opportunities to explore the realms of Development, Portfolio Management, and Social Impact, preparing them for successful careers in the field.

We’re thrilled to be hosting our third intern, Kenneth Adams, for the 2024-25 school year. Kenny’s passion for real estate development and commitment to social impact make him a perfect fit for our team.

We also celebrate our past interns, Moss and Gendrit Hoxa whose contributions have left a lasting impact on our organization.
