The Cure for the Common Building

Many know and love this building for its distinct look. The Lovejoy Medical building is a 38,000 square-foot Modernist icon perched in Portland’s Nob Hill neighborhood. Built in 1963 and left largely untouched, this building was beginning to show its age when we bought it. Having the opportunity to refresh, update, and preserve such a unique part of Portland’s architectural heritage is the kind of project we can really sink our teeth into.

Modern Science

After acquiring this four-story medical building in 2016, we set out to modernize it. We had a vision–to create a medical facility with an unmistakable mid-century modern style that looks beyond the coldly-efficient four walls of standard medical facilities. We wanted to create a space that feels thoughtful and inviting so that practitioners and patients alike show up more engaged, connected, and ready to take care of their health.

Heart and Soul

We worked with local artists and curators to amplify the chic mid-century style, carefully adding details and interesting artifacts throughout the common lobby spaces.

Artistic Curb Appeal

To extend artistic expression to the outside of the building, we commissioned world-renowned Mexican muralist Paola Delfín to add a captivating multi-story art experience on the eastern facing wall looking back at the city of Portland. The surrounding grounds received some extra love too. We added a beautiful outdoor patio with ample seating for patients and tenants to enjoy the sunshine and planted lush greenery all around to soften the hardscapes. With Lovejoy Medical we were successful in creating a welcoming and inviting space for health and wellness.
